When It’s Time to Consider Euthanasia for Your Dog or Cat

Signs your pet is nearing end of life

While every pet and situation is different, there are some common signs that may tell you if your dog or cat’s quality of life is compromised.

  • Not eating or drinking

  • Weight loss

  • Being withdrawn or isolating themselves from family

  • Restlessness, unable to get comfortable or lying in odd positions, pacing

  • Avoiding physical contact

  • Excessive panting or trembling

  • Crying or yelping

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Disorientation or confusion

  • Loss of enthusiasm for walks, toys or interaction with other pets and family members

  • Regular or persistent vomiting or diarrhea

  • Lack of grooming (especially in cats)

  • Inability to get up and move around easily, limping, or stiffness that makes it hard to go out to potty or get into the litterbox

If your pet is experiencing any of these signs and you are worried about their well-being, it is important to speak with your veterinarian. Many of these symptoms can be signs of illnesses or conditions that are common in older pets and there may be treatment options available that can relieve their discomfort.

How to know when it’s time to say goodbye to a pet

Euthanasia, or putting your dog or cat to sleep, is sometimes the only way to ease a pet's pain and suffering. It is a heartbreaking decision for any family, but one that most have to face in order to give their beloved pet a peaceful and dignified passing.

You and your family understand your pet better than anyone else. Often, when the family perceives that their pet is experiencing more bad days than good, the decision to let them go can be the last gift you give your cherished companion.

If you are in need of in-home hospice support as you consider euthanasia for your pet, the veterinarians at Coastal Pet Hospice can provide a personalized, quality of life assessment and counseling to help you make a decision based on your pet’s best interests.
